Sustainability Policy of Baku Eurasian University

 Baku Eurasian University adopts the definition of Sustainability namely … “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” and we are aligned with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (2015).  This means we strive to balance the economic, environmental and social impacts of decisions, to maximise our positive contributions, especially through pioneering research, innovative teaching, and learning and to minimise the negative impacts of how we operate.

We acknowledge that the current state of the world is not achieving this, and in an attempt to accomplish the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set forth by the UN, efforts are being made on a global scale to build a more sustainable society.

Our actions have an effect on society, the environment, and the economy locally, nationally, and internationally. Our attention is directed towards the conduct and activities of our faculty, staff, and involvement with our surrounding communities. The key areas for addressing are:

• • Energy use:  Promote energy-saving behaviours and estate investments to cut carbon emissions and switch to lower-carbon alternatives.
  • Pollution Prevention: ensuring that the proper measures, such as emission and discharge restrictions, are in place to prevent contamination of the air, land, and water.
  • Waste and material resources: Keep preventing and reducing waste from being produced, and make more use of resources before recycling or disposing of them.
  • Transport:   Reduce the negative effects of staff and student commutes and business travel by promoting the use of more environmentally friendly transportation options, active transportation, carpooling, public transportation, and video conferencing.
  • Investment: The main goal of the university's investment portfolio is to preserve capital to support the institution's future expansion, programs, and mission while carefully growing assets over time. Taking into account its long-term investment perspective and strong financial position, the university admits a moderate risk tolerance. To achieve sustainable growth, the investment strategy will strike a balance between risk and return. In keeping with the university's commitment to moral and responsible investing, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations will be taken into consideration when making investment decisions.
  • Community: Make sure our community is aware of this policy, encourage more environmentally friendly behaviours, collaborate with regional and global networks, and encourage volunteerism.
  • Wellbeing:  Maintain efforts to support and uplift our faculty, staff, and students' well-being.
  • Adapting for climate change: Make sure the campus is ready to tackle the problems posed by climate change, keeping in mind how frequently extreme heatwaves, floods, and droughts are occurring.
  • Curriculum: Creating curriculum based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for each discipline.

By ensuring that our courses address sustainability in the context of each subject, we will prepare our students to be competent practitioners of sustainability. In their chosen careers and in their personal lives, we will empower our graduates to be responsible global citizens, perceptive leaders, and contributors to a more sustainable future. In order to create programs on climate change and sustainable solutions, ranging from natural to social capital, we will make use of our broad academic background.

Our goal is to make sure that every member of our staff and students is aware of the crucial concerns surrounding environmental and social sustainability. We also want to teach discipline-specific sustainability information in all of our academic programs through the implementation of the SDGs.  We want students, regardless of their field of study—literature or international relations—to know, or have an opportunity to learn, what sustainability will mean for them as professionals when they enter the workforce.

As a community of faculty, staff, and students, we understand that sustainability is everyone's responsibility, and we are already changing things through our actions and attitudes. Although some members of our community are more knowledgeable than others, we are all here to play a part. We can and will take further action, such as using more environmentally friendly transportation, turning off lights and power, minimizing waste, and recycling.

We invite all members of the University community, including staff, students, and alumni, to join us as we reaffirm and deepen our commitment to addressing the global climate emergency and to use our combined influence for positive, sustainable change.

By declaring a climate emergency, we recognize that we need to do more and do it more quickly if we truly are going to help the world reduce the impacts of climate crisis.

In developing and implementing a climate action policy, it is important to involve stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, and the local community. Regular assessments and updates to the policy can ensure its effectiveness and relevance over time.

The Sustainability Group will review this policy every year, together with any related goals and targets, and report progress to the University Executive Board every two years.
